How long have I been at CrossFit Algiers: 8 months
What keeps me coming back?
I can appreciate a challenge. CrossFit does that for me. I have been in some type of exercise regimen since my junior high/high school days of playing sports. I have tried the gym in the past (buddy up with a friend, work out a certain body part one day, another the next, yada yada). Got bored. I am a runner, a hip injury made me realize I was not properly stretching or strengthening the other parts of my body my legs need, which caused me to have a 3-year hiatus of doing anything weight/exercise related. I also love riding my bike for longs rides but that was not enough to keep me going either. I am not a fan of monotony. CrossFit puts a variety of workouts in a one-hour span. The regimen is tough at times but in the end I appreciate the sense of accomplishment I feel when I am done (even though there are times I feel like I cannot breathe or want to give up because my brain is whining LOL!)
How did I find CrossFit? I zoned in on CrossFit Algiers specifically because of Leslie McWilson. She would randomly post her accomplishments at CrossFit on Facebook and I was finally starting to get back to running when I reached out to her for more information. She invited me to the Foundations Class back in May of 2019 and I committed.
How has CrossFit Changed my life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?
I went from an on my feet all day type of job to sitting at a desk all day. I know feel compelled to go walk around the hospital campus at times throughout the day. My mind looks forward to a breath of fresh air. I enjoy my long distance bike rides and running more; it feels like my whole body is in harmony with itself. It is not just my legs doing all the work.
What motivates/inspires me? Acts of kindness. Seeing people live there best life, whether it be through traveling to different places, hanging with family/friends, loving their animals/children or
accomplishing a task they did not think was possible.
Is there something you have done here that you never thought you could do?
An overhead squat. I am starting to get my brain to understand how to do an overhead squat. Upper body strength has never been my best feature. So holding weight over my head and balancing the
strength of my legs with the weakness of my upper body is something I am starting to get accustomed to.
Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through CrossFit Algiers?
A strict pull up.
Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit.
I love being outdoors. I love warm weather but can appreciate the cold in small doses. I am not a planner so spontaneity is my friend. I love to go Junking (some call it Antiquing) and repurpose stuff
(turn the ugly into beautiful again).
My diet: I love to cook so my diet is full of different options. Seafood, Turkey, Chicken, lots of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, soups. Red Meat on occasions (my anemic self needs it sometimes). I prefer
potato chips to French fries, Sweet Tart chews, and a piece or two of fried chicken from time to time. Oh I LOVE desserts, especially homemade.
Advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit Algiers?
If you want to try it, TRY IT. Allow yourself to challenge what you think you cannot do. Do not compare yourself to the next person. It is about YOU and YOUR goals, not what the others are doing. We are all in the same class determined to achieve our own goal and no one is there to outdo the other. We support each other.
Any advice for new members?
Do it because YOU want to. Do not focus on the time clock. Focus on completing the task. Everything else begins to develop when you continue to show up. In addition, never tell yourself you cannot when a workout looks impossible. Tell yourself YOU ARE NOT THERE YET and let yourself do what it CAN.
