Name: Caren Singleton

Age: 52 (53 in May)

Occupation: Licensing Analyst @State Board of CPAs of Louisiana

Which class do you usually attend? 5:15pm

Favorite WOD: The CrossFit Open 19.5—because I didn’t even realize I have finished under the timecap—I was going back to the barbell for more thrusters and Odette was like, “You’re done.” I was so surprised!

Favorite Lift: Tie between the deadlift and back squat.

How long have you been CrossFitting? July will be 2 years.

What keeps you coming back? This place, these people. The energy and support is amazing. From the moment you walk through the door, you are greeted, welcomed and challenged to give every workout all you’ve got. This is no ordinary gym.

How did you find CrossFit? My friend Lena (who should still be a member…..) invited me to the Bring a Friend Day. After experiencing the high energy, friendly atmosphere and challenging workout, I was hooked.

What is your athletic background?  Beginning in 2005, I have completed in numerous duathlons, triathlons & 5k, 10k, ½ marathons, 1 full marathon…loved running the most until I started having overuse injuries.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness?  I am stronger, more confident and happier.

Is there something you have done here that you never thought you could do?  Definitely the rope climb. I used to watch others in the gym and think that I would never be able to make it to the top.

What goals have you achieved so far, and what else do you want to accomplish? May 3rd will be seven years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am fighting the aging process with exercise and have experienced vast improvements in my overall strength and skills. I want to be the 98 year old still in the gym lifting.

Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit? Spending time with my family and friends, photography, Saints Football, travel, fishing, jigsaw puzzles…so many things!

Any advice for new members? Don’t let the rumors scare you away. Take the first step and show up for a class. Not only will this place surprise and amaze you, you will surprise and amaze yourself because you (too) are an athlete who is capable of achieving so much more than you think.  Try it, you’ll love it!
