The CrossFit Open Explained

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The CrossFit Open kicks off Oct. 10, and CrossFit Algiers is ALL IN! We host an intramural Open, and we also encourage you to sign up for the CrossFit Games Open put on by CrossFit HQ (register here.)

How it works

The CrossFit Games Open is the largest fitness competition on Earth and an exciting showcase of the CrossFit community. Athletes like you, from all around the world, show up and push themselves further than they ever thought possible over a five-week period. If you’re registered with CrossFit HQ, your workouts will be tracked on a leaderboard with 400,000-plus people throughout the world.

Workouts are announced by HQ every Thursday starting Oct. 10 at 7 pm CST, and you can watch the live announcements online. Your coaches will be watching, and we’ll program the workouts as our regular Friday workouts. Whether you sign up with HQ or not, you’ll be part of the CrossFit Algiers Intramural Open. Every member of the gym has been assigned to a CrossFit Algiers Intramural Open team, and we’ll add new members to teams as we get them. Not sure which team you’re on? Find out here.

Our intramural teams will compete, and we’ll recognize the top team at the holiday party. The winning team gets bragging rights for the year, their names on a banner at the gym AND gets to name a workout for the whole gym. Teams can get points for a lot of different things, so check with your team captain on what you can do to help.

RX versus Scaled

When the workouts are announced by HQ, there will be different options for “Rx” and “Scaled.” These options are set by HQ, and if you’re registered for the “big” Open, you have to complete at least one rep of either the Rx or Scaled workout as it is written to post a score on the Games Open leaderboard. Rx workouts always score higher than Scaled workouts on the HQ CrossFit Games Open. For our intramural Open, you get points for participating, no matter what scaling option you use. Your coaches will scale the workout to your individual needs – not necessarily what the Games Open workout says. You’ll be able to post a score through Wodify for the CrossFit Algiers Intramural Open with any scaling option.


CrossFit Open workouts are judged. The workouts will run in “heats” with athletes judging each other. Coaches will go over the standards for the workout before you begin, and you’ll be expected to hold people to the standards. It’s very important to get an accurate score for these workouts, because that’s how you get an accurate picture of your fitness. For the HQ CrossFit Games Open, the scores are one way people compete to get a chance to go to the Games, so the community needs us to be relentless in maintaining the standards.


Because of the unpredictable nature of the workouts, classtimes will be fast and furious. You can help by showing up on time (and even early). Depending on the workout, there may not be time or space to do much  warming up. Warm up as much as you can before you arrive, and be respectful of those who are working out if you are at one of the later classes. The opposite is true, as well. Depending on the workout, we may have to run multiple heats, which could mean you have to wait a while before your heat begins. Watch the announcement prior to coming to class, and pay close attention when your coach explains the workout. Be ready for anything – the Open is full of surprises.


The CrossFit Open is a great chance to come together as a worldwide community and have some fun with our fitness. You’ll see some amazing things from yourself and your friends, and you’ll do things you never thought possible. If you have a great workout, celebrate! If a workout doesn’t go as you planned, celebrate then, too! At the end of the day, the score isn’t what matters most – it’s the experience.
