Back to school – and the basics

“Virtuousity – doing the ordinary extraordinarily well.” I don’t know when I first heard this quote in regard to CrossFit, but it’s been around forever – and for good reason.  Every athlete can improve by focusing on the basics. There are so many “cool” and “flashy” movements in CrossFit, and it’s easy to get entranced by pursuing them. We all should push the envelope, and expand our skillset – but not at the expense of the basics.

That’s one of the reasons why we’re going old school and reviving the Squat Squad for our September gym challenge. The air squat is the foundation of many the skills and movements we do, and every one of us can get better at it. The squat, the press and the deadlift can be refined almost infinitely, and if you’re unsure of where your issues lie – ask a coach.

Seek out opportunities to practice the basics, and to improve them. Check your ego on workouts, and fix the movement before loading up for Rx. Make every movement extraordinary – and never quit seeking improvement.
