August 2016 Athlete of the Month
Occupation: Academic Coordinator
Which class do you usually attend? 5:15 a.m. or 5:15 p.m.
Favorite WOD: The more endurance based WODs…i.e. rounds consisting of running, kettlebell swings, rope climbing, thrusters etc. would be right up my alley
Favorite Lift: Back Squats
How long have you been CrossFitting? I started at CrossFit Algiers in August 2015
What keeps you coming back? Definitely the coaches and the members of CrossFit Algiers. Also, the sense of community where everyone supports each other.
How did you find CrossFit? The location of CrossFit Algiers is on my route to and from home. Every day I drove by I kept seeing the sign. I was actually excited that Algiers has a CrossFit gym but I was uncertain that I would join. Well, I got home one day, got on their website and signed up for a free trial class. After I attended the trial class, I knew right away that I was going to enjoy this new challenge and now I am hooked!
What is your athletic background? Runner and triathlete. I have completed several full and half marathons and three full ironman.
How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness? CrossFit has changed my life immensely. I was in a very emotional and difficult stage of my life before I started CrossFit. I had no drive or goals set for myself. Even though I enjoy to run, at this point in time I was running very little. I was eating very unhealthy that resulted in weight gain and I had zero motivation to better myself. CrossFit has taught me how to set goals, work hard, never give up and achieve them. It has also changed my body physique, made me physically and mentally stronger, more confident and most importantly CrossFit has given me the opportunity to meet new people and build beautiful friendships.
Is there something you have done here that you never thought you could do? Yes indeed……handstand pushup and rope climb. The list goes on but these two stand out.
What motivates/inspires you?
The incredible support and encouragement from the owners/coaches Jodi & Andy, as well as the other CrossFit Algiers coaches. They have created an atmosphere that is so inclusive and welcoming that you can’t help but want to come workout here every day.
I am truly inspired by the athletes of CFA. It does not matter what age, shape, race or religion they are; much less how strong, fast and experienced they may be. These athletes all come together to work and give it their all. It is a magical feeling when so many people that have the same goals come together in one place to sweat. This truly gives you a feeling of accomplishment.
What goals have you achieved so far, and what else do you want to accomplish? To name a few: commitment, to never give up and get stronger. I would like to become more efficient at movements and using better form. One day to get better at kipping (I am not coordinated) and eventually get to do a bar muscle-up.
Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit? I enjoy family time, traveling, yoga, dining out and wine and cheese.
Any advice for new members? If you are looking to start CrossFit or questioning yourself if you should start, DO IT! You will not regret it. At CrossFit Algiers you will meet the best people and be put through some tough workouts. You will even ask yourself over and over again why you are doing this but after you did it the feeling of accomplishment is incredible and you will return the next day. In my opinion….the beauty of CrossFit is that every day is different. If we didn’t love it, we wouldn’t be coming back for more!!
