5 Ways to Stay Fit on Vacation

With the spring and summer season upon us we will no doubt spend

Coach Rhonda and her sister get some miles in on vacation this year.

time on vacation. That is no reason to let our exercise routine go by the wayside! After all, you’ve worked hard in the fall and winter season to earn that fantastic body, don’t let vacation blow your efforts.  Here is a list of some of my favorite ways to get my exercise in while on vacation:

  1. Find CrossFit/fitness classes in the area – Nobody loves a CrossFitter more than other CrossFitters! Contact the local CrossFit gym before you leave for your vacation destination. View the website and find out what time their classes are. Find out the drop-in fees (expect to pay the drop in fees!). And go get in a kickass workout. If you belong to a chain globo gym make sure you locate the closest one and visit while on vacation.  Most gyms also have guest memberships that you can use while on vacation.
  2. Get a Run/Brisk Walk in.  – There is no better way to sightsee than to go for a run! Plan ahead and map out a run before you leave for your destination. Websites like mapmyrun.com and waljogrun.com make it easy to find routes worldwide. I usually start by running around the area where I am staying. If staying at a hotel, ask the concierge or front desk if there is a safe running trail around the hotel. Find a local park and go for a run. Find a local running group or better yet find a local 5K and signup!
  3. Workout in your hotel – Utilize the hotel gym. Many hotels have some basic equipment to keep your exercise routine continuing. Treadmills, Eliptical Machines, and Stationary Bikes are ususally the standard fare. Some hotel gyms also have dumbells or a Smith machine to get some strength workouts in.  If your hotel does not have a gym this is a great opportunity to go back to your standard bodyweight movements such as squats, pushups and situps. If your hotel has multipile levels you could also do stair sprints.
  4. Rent a bike – Many cities now have bike rental programs like New Orleans’ “blue bikes.” This is another way see the city in a different way.  Are you staying near the water? Rent a paddle board or kayak and take your workout to the water. This is a perfect opportunity to try something new and burn calories in the process.
  5. Involve the entire family – Family vacation should be fun for everyone. When planning, make sure you plan activities that get the entire family moving! Hiking, biking, swimming, running, enjoy catching up with family in a whole new way.
