Favorite WOD: McGhee Hero WOD (AMRAP of deadlifts, pushups, box jumps)

 

Favorite Lift: back squat

 

How long have you been CrossFitting? 2 years

 

What keeps you coming back? The variation of the workouts and the ever present challenge I know awaits when stepping into the gym. Each time I walk in the gym, I have the feeling I used to have before athletic competitions, a nervous excitement!

 

How did you find CrossFit? I had known about CrossFit for about 10 years prior to ever stepping foot into a box. My husband, a former collegiate and high school strength coach, and I were looking for a way to work out together. I was always too afraid to embark on the CrossFit journey without him so we made a deal. In 2015, we made a pact to join a CrossFit gym after the gluttony of Mardi Gras. We were instantly hooked!

 

What is your athletic background? I have always been involved in sports from as long as I can remember. When I was younger, my dad and I would go “shoot hoops” and we were not allowed to leave the court until we hit 10 consecutive free throws. Sometimes we were there until dark! I was a setter for my high school volleyball and ran track

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness? I know CrossFit has made me stronger, but I didn’t realize how strong until recently. I would continue to make gains on lifts and see progress, but it wasn’t until I got pregnant and had my daughter 12 weeks ago that I realized all that CrossFit has done for me. I truly believe that CrossFit allowed my recovery time to be significantly shortened. I was able to leave the hospital 48 hours after I had my daughter via a c section. Once home, I only needed over the counter pain medication and had no complications. My blood pressure during my pregnancy was always perfect and I was able to lose the pregnancy weight before returning to the gym. CrossFit allowed me to be in good physical shape so I could recover quickly and be the best mom to our little girl.

 

I also travel for work and I can tell you that I’ve never missed a flight because I didn’t get to the gate in time. Sometimes I am sweaty and out of breath, but I have made some ridiculously tight connections running through the airport. I also never need anyone’s assistance to lift my suitcase into the overhead bin. They offer and I decline everytime!

 

Is there something you have done here that you never thought you could do? I never thought I would be able to do a rope climb or a handstand pushup.

 

What motivates/inspires you? I could watch the Crossfit games 24/7 if I could. I am amazed by the athletes and our body’s ability to work and tolerate such extremes of physical activity. I am motivated to see what more my body can do! I also am committed to staying physically fit because it makes me feel good and is a part of who I am. I want to stay strong physically and mentally so I can be the best mom I can be. Crossfit allows for all of that!

 

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through CrossFit. To be able to string together my double unders!

 

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit? I am not a big goal setter when it comes to CrossFit. I put enough pressure on myself in my day to day life that I choose to show up and see what I can accomplish each time I enter the gym. If you find me on a 1 rep max day, I will tell you, “if you tell me how much weight is on my bar, I will hurt you” I like to stay naïve and see where I land!

 

Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit: Sand volleyball, traveling, fine dining, and wine.

Tell me about your diet: My husband and I are big fans of the whole 30 diet model. So my diet consists of mainly protein, vegetables, and fruit. Oh, and chocolate.

 

CrossFit is the best thing you can do for your mind and body. It builds your mental and physical stamina and helps you tackle life’s challenges. Don’t ever be afraid to come to the gym because the workout seems too hard or intimidating. The beauty of CrossFit is the ability to modify any workout to fit your needs and abilities.
